Tech industry explores orbital data centers following political shifts

Recent election results in the United States, marked by a wave of victories for candidates critical of the data center industry, have prompted a segment of the technology sector to reassess reliance on land-based infrastructure. In states like Texas, where regulatory headwinds against data centers are mounting, industry figures have begun publicly advocating for extraterrestrial alternatives.

Elon Musk and various technology investors have suggested that orbital data centers present a viable response to the shifting domestic regulatory climate. The discourse also includes interest in underwater data centers, a concept currently being piloted in other jurisdictions.

Major companies, including Google, SpaceX, and Blue Origin, are already pursuing initiatives to place computing hardware in orbit. While some startups have successfully tested individual high-end GPUs in space, the industry faces significant hurdles. Analysts note that space-based facilities remain substantially more expensive than terrestrial data centers and lack the ability to scale to hyperscale requirements.
