Tech platforms struggle with moderation after graphic livestream

Major social media platforms are once again under scrutiny for their flawed content moderation processes following a disturbing livestream by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. The video, which appeared to show acts of self-harm, rapidly spread across user feeds.

The livestream initially appeared on TikTok, remaining online for several minutes before being taken down. Users in the comments pleaded with Hilton to stop, offered help, and indicated they were contacting authorities. A TikTok spokesperson stated that an automated system flagged the content, but a "moderator error" caused a delay in its removal.

TikTok confirmed it alerted law enforcement and subsequently blocked further streams and banned the account. Despite this, clips and screen recordings of the graphic video quickly proliferated to other social networks.

The incident has raised concerns about the rapid dissemination of violent content. Experts view these events as symptomatic of lax oversight by major tech companies. Katie Paul of the Tech Transparency Project (TTP) noted that platforms have reduced investment in moderation and safety teams, leading to an increase in disturbing content online.

Hilton's family later released a statement confirming he is receiving medical care. Social media users have begun warning each other about the video's triggering nature and graphic imagery.
