Tech stocks and crypto markets decline amid sector uncertainty
The Nasdaq saw its sharpest daily drop since June as weak earnings reports and a major cryptocurrency exchange hack triggered investor selloffs.

Technology stocks and cryptocurrencies experienced a sharp decline on Friday as multiple market pressures converged, resulting in a 3.3% loss for the Nasdaq Composite—the index's worst performance since June. Intel Corporation recorded a 30% drop in share price following a disappointing fourth-quarter outlook, marking its most severe single-day decline in over 50 years. Other semiconductor manufacturers, including Nvidia and Micron, also saw significant downward pressure.
The selloff is largely driven by growing investor skepticism regarding the long-term profitability of aggressive AI infrastructure spending. Alphabet’s recent report, which showed weaker-than-expected ad revenue, has fueled concerns that AI-driven products may disrupt existing high-margin business models. These fears were compounded by reports that hackers successfully compromised Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, with losses estimated at $6.3 billion.
Financial institutions and platforms tied to the digital asset market, such as Coinbase and Robinhood, faced double-digit share price drops. Bitcoin also saw its value fall below $77,000. As the earnings season progresses, market analysts are examining whether the current volatility represents a structural correction or a temporary reaction to recent developments in the tech and crypto spaces.
