Technical Requirements for Sodium-Ion Battery Management Systems
Standard battery management systems designed for LiFePO4 chemistry are incompatible with sodium-ion cells due to fundamental differences in voltage thresholds and state-of-charge tracking.
As the adoption of sodium-ion battery technology expands, manufacturers are highlighting the necessity of chemistry-specific battery management systems (BMS). DALY BMS reports that sodium-ion cells cannot rely on protection settings designed for LiFePO4, as the voltage windows, discharge cut-offs, and state-of-charge (SOC) curves differ significantly between the two chemistries.
Operating a sodium-ion pack with incorrect BMS settings can lead to inaccurate charge monitoring and inadequate cell protection. Sodium-ion cells typically operate at a lower nominal voltage, meaning the series count for a target system voltage must be recalibrated. Furthermore, because voltage-to-SOC relationships vary, utilizing generic BMS presets can cause systemic errors in battery reporting.
DALY BMS now offers custom configurations for sodium-ion integrations, requiring system designers to provide specific cell datasheets to ensure correct protection thresholds and balancing protocols. By moving away from standardized LiFePO4 defaults, the industry aims to improve both the safety and the longevity of emerging sodium-ion battery pack designs.
