TechNode and AICEP Evaluate Technology Cooperation Between Portugal and China
The finale of the Tech Odyssey series examines how Portugal and China are leveraging trade partnerships to foster international technology growth.

TechNode Group has concluded its Tech Odyssey series with a final episode dedicated to the potential for technology collaboration between Portugal and China. Produced in partnership with AICEP, Portugal’s public trade and investment agency, the series aims to shift global perceptions of Portugal from its traditional agricultural exports to its growing technology and research capabilities.
Luís Costa, director of AICEP Shanghai, stated that the initiative is designed to build confidence among international investors while helping Portuguese firms navigate the Chinese market. Costa highlighted health technology and biotechnology as primary sectors for potential investment, citing Portugal’s strong university networks and engineering talent as key assets for prospective Chinese partners.
Francisco Catalão, a former AICEP board member, noted that Portuguese startups are increasingly adopting an international growth strategy from their inception. AICEP supports this ambition through a network spanning over 50 markets, providing the localized expertise necessary for businesses to successfully enter new regions.
As the series concludes, the focus shifts to the practical economic advantages Portugal offers to Chinese firms, including high rates of renewable energy usage and access to broader European logistics networks. AICEP remains tasked with identifying compatible commercial interests to transition these initial dialogues into concrete industrial partnerships.
