For decades, athletes and coaches in Africa have faced challenges due to distance from proper facilities, qualified coaching, and scouting opportunities. A new wave of mobile-first technology is now bridging this gap.
World Rugby's "Get Into Rugby" program has introduced over 3.5 million children to the sport, often through its online Passport platform rather than in-person delivery. Coaches in smaller unions can now access the same technical materials as those in larger, better-funded programs, reducing disparities.
Video analysis and remote scouting are also becoming more accessible. Kenyan platform ProPath Sports uses AI to track young athletes' progress, providing verifiable performance data. Nigerian platform Afriskaut analyzes match footage to identify overlooked talent.
Despite these advancements, significant hurdles persist, primarily related to connectivity and electricity access. Mobile internet penetration in Sub-Saharan Africa hovers around 25%, with rural areas facing even greater challenges.
Technology has not fully leveled the playing field, but it has demonstrated the possibilities when access is improved. Developing the underlying physical infrastructure of power and connectivity is crucial for further progress in African sports.
