Teens and Social Media: Parents' Questions and Shared Experiments Key

Media literacy expert Florian Buschmann suggests that parents should approach teenagers' social media use by asking questions rather than preaching. Examples of introductory questions include: "What annoys you personally about social media?" and "When do you find it beneficial, and when does it go too far?"

According to Buschmann, families' own rules are more crucial than any external regulations. He encourages parents to engage in open dialogue with teens, aiming to understand their perspective and offer support instead of imposing absolute bans. Parents' own online behavior also serves as a model.

Joint, small-scale experiments, such as disabling push notifications for a week, can reduce tension and promote a more relaxed approach. Implementing outright prohibitions can create a void that is difficult to fill; long-term change is more effective.

Buschmann also points out that the discussion often focuses solely on teens, despite significant media consumption by adults. As media use decreases, teens may require assistance in managing their free time. Offering "dopamine alternatives," that is, enjoyable and rewarding activities, can help balance digital and real-life engagement.
