Telefónica Sets New Climate Targets and Digital Wellbeing Goals Under Sustainability Plan

Telefónica has finalized its Global Sustainability Plan for 2026–2030, a roadmap designed to support business growth, operational efficiency, and risk management while advancing a responsible approach to digitalization. The plan aligns with the company's broader Transform & Grow strategic objectives.

The company has set ambitious climate and circular economy targets. By 2030, Telefónica aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% and its Scope 3 emissions by 56%. The long-term objective is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Additionally, the company is targeting zero waste by 2030 through enhanced reuse, refurbishment, and material management.

This strategic update comes amid increasing international competition and a heightened focus on digital sovereignty within the telecommunications sector. Telefónica positions sustainability as a driver of competitiveness in a market shaped by technological change and the energy transition.

The plan encompasses a wide array of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities. These include renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate adaptation, responsible digitalization, child protection, digital wellbeing, rural connectivity, AI governance, and data privacy. Telefónica intends to embed ESG criteria into its business processes and capital allocation.
