Telekom Expands Fiber Network in Bavaria and Saxony

Deutsche Telekom has initiated new fiber network expansion projects in the German states of Bavaria and Saxony in April 2025. These endeavors aim to increase the availability of high-speed internet in several towns and municipalities, potentially providing fiber connections to tens of thousands of new customers.

In Munich, the construction of the fiber network will commence in the Solln and Obersendling districts during the second half of the year. Telekom estimates that over 60 kilometers of fiber optic cable and 86 new network distribution points will be required. The network is expected to serve up to 13,700 households, with completion anticipated by the end of 2026. The company highlights the rapid pace of construction in these areas, describing them as among the fastest in Germany.

In Gammelsdorf, a municipality in the Freising district of Bavaria, network construction has begun for 450 households and businesses. The groundwork for this project, scheduled to last until the end of 2025, has been awarded to the firm INconnect. The realization of the fiber network is expected to involve over eight kilometers of fiber optic cable and 17 distribution points.

Leipzig will see further expansion of Telekom's fiber network into additional city districts. In the northern and eastern parts of Stötteritz, 2,800 households will receive fiber connections starting in early May. In the western parts of Schönefeld, new fiber connections will be established for 1,400 households, with construction beginning in June. In the same month, expansion will start in the northwestern parts of Südvorstadt, serving 4,000 households. A month later, construction will commence to connect 1,600 households in Anger-Crottendorf, located in the eastern part of the district.

The deployment of fiber optic connections offers users significantly higher bandwidths, enabling more efficient and reliable internet usage for both residential and business purposes. These expansion projects are part of Germany's broader efforts to enhance its digital infrastructure.
