Telekom participates in EU field tests for digital identity

Deutsche Telekom is participating with o2 Telefónica and Vodafone in a large-scale European Union field trial aimed at developing a European digital identity. The pilot projects, led by the French-German consortium POTENTIAL, will run until the end of 2024.

The initiative seeks to establish a secure and standardized digital identification method for EU citizens across various online services. This includes testing the activation of mobile contracts and SIM cards, facilitating secure logins for online shopping, citizen services, and healthcare applications.

The project also focuses on preventing digital identity fraud and ensuring data usage complies with GDPR requirements, utilizing only necessary data for each application. The goal is to enhance online security and digital integration for all EU citizens.

Field tests are being conducted across multiple European countries, including Germany, France, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands, Greece, and Ukraine, with the aim of creating a trusted digital identity accessible throughout the EU.
