Tencent in talks to become Manus' largest shareholder

Chinese technology giant Tencent is reportedly in negotiations to acquire a majority stake and become the largest shareholder in AI startup Manus. The discussions were revealed by sources speaking to Reuters, suggesting a potential significant investment.

Manus, developed by Butterfly Effect, operates as an autonomous AI agent capable of tasks such as resume screening, travel planning, and stock analysis. In April 2025, Butterfly Effect secured approximately $75 million in funding, achieving a valuation of around $500 million. Tencent had previously invested in the company during its Series A round in November 2024.

The potential deal follows the earlier blocking of an acquisition by Meta Platforms. Meta's proposed purchase of Manus was valued between $2 billion and $3 billion but was ultimately disallowed by China's National Development and Reform Commission on April 27, 2026. This regulatory decision prompted Manus' investors to seek alternative strategic options.

Tencent's interest underscores its ambition in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence sector. By potentially becoming Manus' largest shareholder, Tencent aims to bolster its position in the competitive AI landscape.
