Tencent opens fourth call for basic science research grants
Tencent has launched the fourth application cycle for its X-Stone research program, providing long-term funding for fundamental science without standard performance metrics.
Tencent has initiated the application process for the fourth phase of its X-Stone Research Program. The program, which focuses on mathematics, physical sciences, and biological/medical sciences, is open for submissions until January 15, 2027.
The program offers five-year funding grants ranging from 15 million to 25 million yuan per researcher. Notably, the initiative does not mandate periodic performance assessments or specific publication quotas, aiming to provide researchers with the financial autonomy required for long-term, high-risk exploration.
Launched with a commitment of 10 billion yuan over a decade, the program has supported 139 researchers to date. The initiative reflects a shift in corporate social responsibility towards fostering fundamental scientific breakthroughs that may lack short-term commercial applications.
