Tencent Uses AI and Games to Preserve Cultural Heritage in Jingdezhen
Tencent has launched an AI-powered game, "Digital Jingdezhen: Porcelain Craft Adventure," to preserve and share the historic porcelain traditions of Jingdezhen, a new UNESCO World Heritage site.
SHENZHEN, China, July 25, 2026 – Tech giant Tencent announced today the launch of "Digital Jingdezhen: Porcelain Craft Adventure," an AI-powered game designed to preserve and promote the thousands-year-old porcelain craft tradition of Jingdezhen. This initiative coincides with the site's recent inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The project leverages Tencent's AI and gaming technologies to create a new model for digital cultural heritage preservation, guided by its "Tech for Good" vision. The aim is to keep Jingdezhen's ancient traditions alive and relevant, fostering sustainable value and broad public engagement, while establishing a potential model for heritage sites globally.
A cornerstone of the initiative is the "Jingdezhen Porcelain Cultural Heritage Multimodal AI Dataset." This comprehensive dataset includes over 30,000 historical records, ceramic specimen data, and information on nearly 1,000 ceramic artifacts worldwide. Tencent utilized technologies like OCR and NLP to structure this data for research and AI-driven applications.
The game allows users to explore Jingdezhen's historical porcelain production sites and learn traditional techniques. AI-generated digital humans and interactive experiences make historical knowledge tangible. The technology also enables users to transform images into 3D porcelain forms, lowering participation barriers.
To foster community involvement, Tencent has also developed the "Digital Heritage Guardian (Jingdezhen)" volunteer program within its Weixin ecosystem. This program encourages public participation in the upkeep and stewardship of physical heritage sites.
