Tennet cancels plans for transformer station in Pöschendorf

Grid operator Tennet has officially halted plans to build a transformer station in the German municipality of Pöschendorf. The decision follows organized opposition from local residents, who expressed concerns regarding the facility's proximity to the village's housing.

The company has since secured alternative sites in the neighboring municipalities of Agethorst and Mehlbek. Sebastian Rutzen, representing Tennet’s public outreach department, stated that the original focus on Pöschendorf was based on existing land assets, but noted that acquiring additional land there proved more complex than in the new locations, which also offer better distance from residential zones.

The facilities in Agethorst and Mehlbek will eventually form the "Nordhub" electrical junction. The current plan includes a transformer station in Mehlbek and a converter station in Agethorst, linked by overhead lines. The total project requires between 45 and 50 hectares, necessitating a multi-municipality footprint.

Tennet is scheduled to provide an update on the project during an information session in Mehlbek on April 9.
