TerraCycle Launches National Nicotine Vape Device Recycling Service in US

TerraCycle, a company specializing in recycling solutions, has launched a new national service in the United States for the collection and recycling of nicotine vape devices. This new program, dubbed VapeCycle, is a response to the rapidly growing waste challenge posed by disposable e-cigarettes.

Disposable vape devices, which have surged in popularity in recent years, contain lithium-ion batteries. These batteries can present a fire hazard if crushed or mishandled during waste processing. Estimates suggest that in the U.S. alone, such devices cause at least $95 million in annual damages to waste facilities due to fires. Until now, there has been no scalable and compliant way to manage this waste stream.

The solution offered by TerraCycle involves prepaid, turnkey containers designed for households, schools, hotels, and municipalities, with bulk options available for larger operators. The devices are disassembled, and their nicotine cartridges are incinerated in compliance with legal requirements.

The company initially piloted the program in New Zealand, where it collected and recycled over a million devices. Subsequently, it operated a national program in Australia for more than two years before bringing the solution to the U.S. TerraCycle is known for its strategy of finding value in waste that would otherwise be discarded, continuously expanding its operations to new waste streams, which have previously included items like juice pouches and cigarette butts.
