TerraFirma Raises $100 Million for Remote Construction Technology

Austin-based TerraFirma, established by former SpaceX engineers Noah Schochet and Noah McGuinness, has raised $100 million in a Series A funding round led by Kleiner Perkins. The company's total funding now stands at approximately $115 million.

The startup aims to transform the construction industry by enabling a single operator to supervise up to five heavy machinery units, such as excavators and loaders, remotely. TerraFirma retrofits conventional construction equipment for remote and semi-autonomous use.

Their proprietary "click to dig" interface allows an operator to map out a task with a 3D model in about 60 seconds, after which the machine can execute the work autonomously for extended periods. TerraFirma claims this technological approach can increase an operator's productivity by at least 300%.

This funding comes amid significant labor challenges in the construction sector, which is projected to need approximately 349,000 additional workers in 2026 to meet demand according to Associated Builders and Contractors.

TerraFirma plans to hire 300 employees over the next year and establish a manufacturing facility and mission control center in Texas.
