Terrestar Expands Coverage by Connecting Satellite and Mobile Networks
Terrestar Solutions has deployed BroadForward's signaling and firewall systems to enhance satellite connectivity in Canada's remote regions. The technology integrates satellite and terrestrial networks for broader mobile access.

Canadian satellite operator Terrestar Solutions has activated signaling infrastructure from BroadForward to enhance its network capabilities. The deployment includes BroadForward's 4G routing (DRA/DEA) and Diameter Firewall (DFW), enabling secure and seamless signaling between satellite and terrestrial networks.
This technological upgrade is crucial for Terrestar's objective of extending mobile and IoT service coverage across Canada's vast, sparsely populated areas lacking traditional terrestrial network reach. The system facilitates the routing of signaling traffic from satellite networks to national mobile networks and vice versa, directly supporting the connection of mobile and IoT devices via satellite.
The implementation supports Terrestar's strategy, including its previously launched hybrid IoT platform and partnerships with other operators. This technology also enables two-way communication and emergency services in areas completely devoid of terrestrial coverage. Industry analysts project significant growth in the convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks (NTN).
At the core of this solution is BroadForward's BFX Unified Signaling Core (USC) platform. It provides a unified platform for managing and securing both satellite and terrestrial network signaling traffic, supporting the evolution towards 5G networks and future direct-to-device satellite services.
