Tesla Changes Negotiation Approach in South Korean Supply Chain

Tesla has begun direct engagement with third and fourth-tier suppliers in South Korea, deviating from traditional automotive industry practices. This move aims to control costs and maintain price competitiveness.

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is reportedly altering its supply chain negotiation practices in South Korea, according to Digitimes. The company has shifted from its previous approach of primarily communicating with Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to directly contacting downstream component and raw material providers.

Industry insiders suggest this strategy of bypassing intermediate suppliers and engaging directly with lower tiers is intended to gain a more precise understanding of costs and reduce markups from middlemen. The goal is to maintain a competitive price advantage in the increasingly crowded electric vehicle market.

However, this direct approach may also place greater negotiation pressure on the tier 3 and 4 suppliers.

Tesla's actions in South Korea reflect a broader trend in the automotive industry towards supply chain optimization. The company's move could further intensify competition with established local players like Hyundai and Kia, as it positions itself as a direct alternative for Korean consumers.
