The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Tesla's Cybercab vehicle. The probe will examine the process and technical data Tesla relied upon when certifying the vehicle for road use.
Central to the investigation is the Cybercab's apparent absence of standard safety features such as sideview mirrors, pedals, and a steering wheel. These elements are often mandated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
NHTSA stated it is initiating an "audit query" to review Tesla's certification procedures and supporting technical information. The agency has not yet provided further details on the scope of the investigation or potential consequences.
Tesla has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the NHTSA investigation. The Cybercab's unique design and its implications for future automotive regulations have been a subject of discussion within the industry.
