Tesla Expands Home Backup Power Feature to Model 3 and Y

Tesla has expanded its "Powershare Home Backup" feature, enabling owners of Model 3 and Model Y vehicles to utilize their electric car batteries as a backup power source for their homes during electricity outages. Previously, this capability was exclusive to the Cybertruck.

The feature requires Tesla's Powerwall 3 energy storage system for current functionality, with support for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus expected soon. Tesla states that the Model 3 and Model Y can extend home backup power for over two days under certain conditions.

This bidirectional charging capability is not unique to Tesla. Other manufacturers like Kia and General Motors offer similar vehicle-to-home power features, and Nissan's Leaf provided power-to-grid charging technology in the past.

The expansion aims to enhance the utility of Tesla vehicles beyond transportation, providing owners with a potential solution for maintaining power during grid disruptions and adding value to their electric car investment.
