Tesla Extends Robotaxi Hours, Tackles Pet Recognition Challenge at Night

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced an extension of Robotaxi operating hours and revealed the development team is working to solve the difficult problem of identifying pets in low-light conditions.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Saturday that the operating hours for the company's Robotaxi service in Austin will be extended from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Musk also disclosed that the development team is focused on overcoming a significant challenge: accurately identifying pets in poor nighttime visibility.

"The core problem we're working on is not running over pets at night," Musk posted on the X platform. He elaborated that the issue involves preventing accidents when a small gray cat might run onto a gray asphalt road in the dark, making it difficult to detect.

Tesla's autonomous driving system, which relies on cameras and various sensors, has previously faced scrutiny regarding its performance in adverse lighting. The company's vehicle manuals acknowledge that low-light conditions, such as unlit roads at night, can limit the cameras' ability to provide precise visual information. The unpredictable movements of animals like cats and dogs present a higher risk compared to standard traffic flow.

In response to user comments, Musk suggested that artificial intelligence could enhance the system's nighttime recognition capabilities. "With AI performing photon-counting analysis, visible light cameras can achieve very good recognition in the dark," he stated. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating Tesla's FSD system's ability to detect road hazards in low-visibility conditions.

Competitor Waymo employs LiDAR technology, which uses laser beams for environmental sensing. Despite this, a Waymo vehicle was involved in an incident where it struck and killed a cat last year during nighttime operation. In a separate incident in September 2025, a Tesla Model Y operating as a Robotaxi in Austin struck a dog that ran into the road; the dog reportedly left the scene without apparent injury.
