Tesla FSD: Driver Asleep, Crashes Into Police Cars
California Highway Patrol warns about Tesla's 'Full Self-Driving' system after a crash where the driver reportedly fell asleep and struck two patrol vehicles.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has issued a warning regarding the limitations of Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) system following an incident where a driver claims he was asleep and using the system when his vehicle crashed into two parked patrol cars.
Video released by the CHP shows the Tesla speeding past flares, cones, and emergency lights at the scene of a prior accident before ramming into the rear of a parked patrol vehicle. Two officers were seriously injured in the collision and transported to a hospital.
The CHP stressed that "despite its name, full self-driving is not fully autonomous" and that the technology "does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles."
The incident raises further questions about the safety of driver-assist technologies and drivers' understanding and use of these systems. The CHP reminded the public that drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control at all times, even when automated systems are engaged.
