Tesla FSD under investigation following fatal California collision
California authorities are investigating a fatal accident involving a Tesla vehicle that reportedly had its FSD system engaged at the time of the collision.
A 71-year-old pedestrian died after being struck by a Tesla on Interstate 80 in Vallejo, California, on October 22. The 26-year-old driver informed the California Highway Patrol (CHP) that the vehicle’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system was active when the incident occurred.
Dashcam footage retrieved by investigators indicates the vehicle was traveling at approximately 70 mph when the pedestrian entered the roadway. The footage shows the vehicle initiated braking and attempted a steering maneuver to avoid the impact, but the right-front section of the car struck the individual. Following the initial collision, the pedestrian was reportedly struck by at least one other vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.
The CHP investigation is ongoing, and officials have not yet issued any citations or confirmed the operational status of the FSD software through backend vehicle data. Authorities reiterated that FSD systems do not constitute fully autonomous driving and that human drivers remain legally responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle at all times.
