Tesla is preparing a significant update for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, with version 15 set to introduce enhanced safety and accident-avoidance capabilities. The update aims to improve the system's ability to predict hazards earlier and react more quickly to potential dangers.
Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's AI lead, revealed the direction of FSD v15's safety upgrades following a recent incident where a Tesla vehicle actively maneuvered to avoid a car exiting a parking lot. Elluswamy stated that FSD v15 will feature earlier hazard prediction and faster reaction times, leading to substantially improved safety and collision avoidance.
The internal development of FSD v15 is considered a major architectural upgrade. It involves expanding the scale of neural networks and strengthening the connection between prediction and control modules. Tesla has begun testing early versions of FSD v15 within its Robotaxi operations and is also rolling out safety features like Automatic Collision Evasion to existing customer vehicles.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously indicated that FSD v15 is expected to significantly surpass human driving capabilities in terms of safety, even in complex scenarios. The company has been testing preliminary FSD v15 versions in its Robotaxi fleet, signaling ongoing development and a commitment to advancing autonomous driving safety.
