Automaker Tesla has revealed a patent application for a new, multi-functional active rear spoiler system. The patent, filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), details a retractable aerodynamic component designed to enhance a vehicle's downforce and stability at high speeds.
The proposed spoiler can adjust its position and angle to optimize performance. In a retracted state, it lies flush with the body for reduced drag during normal driving. When deployed, it can generate significant downforce for improved cornering and braking grip, essential for high-performance vehicles. The system also includes a feature to retract automatically in the event of an impending collision, minimizing potential damage.
This development comes shortly before the scheduled reveal of Tesla's next-generation Roadster, slated for October 1. While the patent does not explicitly confirm the spoiler's inclusion in the Roadster, it aligns with the vehicle's focus on extreme performance. The Roadster is already promised to achieve 0-60 mph in under two seconds, with optional SpaceX-provided "cold gas thruster" acceleration potentially pushing it under one second.
Tesla has previously explored advanced aerodynamics, including a patent for a ground-effect fan system. The company has recently reopened global pre-orders for the Roadster and released new teaser images, indicating design updates since its 2017 debut.
