Tesla patents solution for front camera fogging

Tesla has developed a new patent application that aims to solve the issue of fogging on the front camera's lens, which is caused by off-gassing from interior vehicle components.

The patent proposes integrating a material capable of absorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) directly into the housing of the front camera. These compounds are emitted by plastics and other materials within the vehicle over time. When they cannot dissipate, they can condense on the interior of the windshield, forming a film that obstructs the camera's view.

This problem has been experienced by Tesla owners who report visibility warnings even when the exterior of the windshield is clean. Traditionally, removing this film requires costly service, involving the disassembly of the rearview mirror and camera housing. In the US, Tesla offers this cleaning service for between $50 and $89, depending on the vehicle model.

Tesla has previously expressed interest in simplifying the cleaning process for the front camera. However, this new patent focuses on addressing the root cause of the problem by preventing contaminant buildup rather than merely facilitating its removal.

The patented solution would involve using a polypropylene material mixed with microscopic, zeolite-like aluminosilicate particles. These particles would absorb and trap VOC molecules. While the patent does not guarantee the technology's implementation in production vehicles, it indicates Tesla's pursuit of passive solutions to prevent front camera visibility issues.
