Tesla is significantly increasing its investment in artificial intelligence (AI), CEO Elon Musk announced during the company's second-quarter earnings call. Musk emphasized that accelerating investments is paramount, even if it means some capital is not optimally utilized. "Our capital expenditures should move as fast as possible, without being wasteful. We're not focused on extreme capital efficiency because that would slow down development," Musk stated.

The company's capital expenditures for the second quarter reached $6.5 billion, a 142% increase year-over-year. These investments are directed towards building new production lines for initiatives such as Cybercab autonomous taxis and Optimus humanoid robots. A negative free cash flow for the first time this year reflects the heightened spending, contributing to a dip in the company's stock price in pre-market trading.

Tesla anticipates its full-year capital expenditures will exceed $25 billion. The company is also seeking new debt financing facilities for up to $30 billion. Future investments include new solar panel factories, expanding AI computing power, and a joint "Terafab" semiconductor factory with SpaceX.

The race in the AI sector is intensifying, with rivals like Alphabet also boosting their spending. Musk, however, defended Tesla's capital expenditure efficiency, describing it as potentially the fastest industrial expansion in the U.S. since World War II. He argued that the company is simultaneously investing in productive assets that create long-term value.
