Tesla Recalls 15 China and Germany-Built Model 3/Y in US for Safety Standard Non-Compliance

Tesla is initiating a repurchase program in the United States for 15 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles manufactured in China and Germany. These vehicles, originally produced for the Canadian market and subsequently imported into the US by customers, do not fully comply with US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

According to Tesla's filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects 12 Model 3 units from the 2024 model year and 3 Model Y units from the 2026 model year. Tesla has ceased issuing compliance certifications for these vehicles destined for import into the US.

The non-compliance stems from design and configuration differences specific to Canadian market vehicles. Notably, these cars lack driver knee airbags required by US regulations for occupant crash protection under FMVSS 208. Additionally, certain Model Y vehicles do not meet FMVSS 201 requirements for interior impact protection, and some Model 3s have not completed required bumper impact tests.

An internal investigation was launched by Tesla in April 2026 following an unusual request for a compliance certificate. The review confirmed discrepancies impacting safety standards. The company will repurchase the 15 affected vehicles at no cost to the owners, rather than attempting repairs.

Tesla has stated that no warranty claims, crashes, or injuries related to this issue have been reported. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by September 5.
