Tesla renames 'Full Self-Driving' to 'Tesla Assisted Driving' in Europe

Automaker Tesla has rebranded its advanced driver assistance system in Europe, changing its name from "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" to "Tesla Assisted Driving." The shift follows objections from Germany's Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

The name change represents a significant adjustment for Tesla, which has long marketed the system using the "Full Self-Driving" moniker, despite it requiring constant driver supervision and intervention. This rebranding could facilitate broader adoption of the technology across the continent, potentially unlocking substantial new revenue for the company.

Earlier this month, German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger stated that the term "Full Self-Driving" was misleading as the system does not perform the entire driving task autonomously. According to the ministry, Tesla proposed the name change after discussions held last month. Bilger has indicated he will now advocate for the approval of "Tesla Assisted Driving" throughout Europe ahead of a potential EU-wide vote later this year.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been actively seeking approval for the FSD system in Europe for some time. He has previously stated on social media that the system's implementation in Europe would save lives, both for vehicle occupants and for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. Musk has publicly thanked Bilger for facilitating the name change.
