Tesla to Scale Semi Truck Production with Nevada Factory Opening

Tesla is officially opening its first factory dedicated to high-volume production of the Semi, a heavy-duty electric truck, in Sparks, Nevada, on Thursday. The facility is expected to significantly increase the company's manufacturing capacity for the model.

The electric vehicle maker first unveiled the Semi in 2017 and began limited deliveries to early customers, including PepsiCo, in 2022. A livestream of the ribbon-cutting event is scheduled for Thursday evening.

The factory opening occurs as Tesla's core electric vehicle business faces increasing global competition. Rising diesel costs, meanwhile, could present an opportunity for greater adoption of electric trucks in the commercial transport sector.

Tesla has previously encountered production challenges with its Cybertruck pickup. However, recent orders indicate growing interest in the Semi. Industry coalition ZET SCALE has selected Tesla as its primary manufacturer for an initial order of 2,500 trucks, and trucking firm Einride has ordered 500 Semi trucks.

CEO Elon Musk has stated that Tesla is developing autonomous driving systems for the Semi, with expectations for near-term availability. Musk has highlighted the importance of self-driving technology to address driver shortages in the trucking industry. Competitors such as Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI are already conducting driverless tests and hauling cargo on public roads.
