Tesla's Cybercab Deployed Amid Federal Safety Investigation
Tesla has launched its driverless Cybercab, a two-seater vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, in two states. However, the U.S. government is investigating whether the vehicle meets federal safety standards.
Tesla has deployed its Cybercab, a distinctive two-seater vehicle lacking a steering wheel and brake pedals, for public use in two U.S. states. Concurrently, the U.S. federal government has initiated an investigation into whether the autonomous vehicle complies with federal safety standards.
The deployment saw hundreds of enthusiasts invited to downtown Austin, Texas, to experience rides in the driverless Cybercabs. Tesla intends to integrate these vehicles into its Robotaxi ride-hail network, which is currently operational in select cities across Texas and Florida.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is in the process of updating vehicle standards to facilitate the deployment of autonomous cars on public roads. This includes revising eight rules, potentially removing requirements for components such as brake pedals, windshield wipers, and rearview mirrors that may not be necessary for self-driving vehicles. However, existing regulations remain in effect.
Tesla has not issued a statement regarding the federal investigation.
