Tesla's FSD System to Add Pothole Avoidance Feature

Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is on the verge of a significant enhancement, introducing the capability for vehicles to automatically detect and avoid road potholes. CEO Elon Musk recently stated that this feature will be rolled out soon.

The "pothole avoidance" functionality has been noted in the release notes for FSD version 14, listed as an upcoming improvement. Potholes, regardless of their size or shape, pose a risk to vehicles, potentially causing damage to tires and rims, alignment issues, or even injuries to occupants in severe cases.

While FSD has demonstrated proficiency in navigating around various road obstructions like debris and discarded items, identifying and reacting to certain road conditions, such as potholes and sudden changes in road layout, has remained a challenge. This update suggests improvements in the system's 3D environment modeling and algorithms.

Musk has discussed the prospect of automatic pothole avoidance for an extended period. He first acknowledged the potential for such a feature in 2019 and later confirmed in 2020 that Tesla was actively collecting data on road imperfections to enable vehicles to automatically slow down or maneuver around them. The ability to handle such road hazards is considered crucial for advancing towards fully autonomous driving.

Alongside the pothole avoidance update, Tesla is preparing to launch its Cybercab service. This initiative is part of Tesla's long-term vision for autonomous transportation, where vehicles could operate without human intervention, allowing occupants to focus on other activities during transit.
