Tesla's Optimus Robot Production Increases Tenfold Amidst Stalled Mass Production

Tesla has significantly ramped up production of its Optimus humanoid robot in recent months, reportedly increasing output by tenfold. However, the company continues to face substantial challenges in achieving stable, scalable mass production.

Obstacles to scaled production include the complexity of the robot's hands, automation equipment, and limitations from suppliers. Last month, Tesla produced hundreds of robots weekly, a jump from dozens per week during pilot testing in the second quarter. Management has informed employees of a goal to establish a continuously operating automated production line by year-end, aiming for over 1,000 units weekly, though this remains far from the ultimate target of approximately 20,000 units per week.

CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly called Optimus Tesla's most important product, envisioning its use in manufacturing, data centers, and everyday tasks. Musk views Optimus as a key driver for Tesla's transformation into an AI company, moving beyond its current revenue reliance on vehicle sales.

The Optimus project has seen multiple timeline adjustments since its initial announcement. Despite Musk's past predictions of readiness for production as early as the following year, the path to commercialization is proving complex. The current V3 models, which are lighter and more human-like, are primarily used for internal testing and data collection, operating under strict supervision in controlled environments. Tesla plans to initially lease Optimus robots to external commercial clients, gathering data to improve its AI systems, rather than direct sales.
