Tesla's robotaxi miles dropped 36% in Q2

Tesla's nascent robotaxi network saw a significant decrease in paid miles traveled during the second quarter, with a 36% drop compared to the first quarter, according to company data released Wednesday.

This decline occurred even as Tesla expanded its robotaxi operations to six cities across Texas and Florida. The decrease runs counter to the company's stated ambitions and strategies, which have heavily focused on the development of a large-scale autonomous taxi fleet.

While Tesla's presented charts may suggest steady growth, a closer look at the quarterly figures reveals a drop from approximately 1.1 million paid miles in the first quarter to around 700,000 miles in the second quarter.

CEO Elon Musk acknowledged during the company's earnings call that the scaling of the robotaxi service is being constrained by the need to gather specific driving data for the upcoming "Cybercab" model. He explained that unlike the vast amounts of data collected from existing Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, more miles are needed for the Cybercab platform before a large deployment can occur.
