Texas Halts New Data Center Power Connections Amid Demand Surge

Texas has placed a temporary halt on all new power grid connections for data centers, less than a year after being declared an "epicenter of AI development." Governor Greg Abbott issued the directive on August 3, requiring regulators and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to conduct a comprehensive audit of data centers in the interconnection process.

The moratorium aims to gather more information about the potential impacts of these facilities on the state's power grid and local communities. Texas has actively courted data center development by offering incentives such as cheap land, abundant energy resources, tax breaks, and reduced regulations, positioning itself to potentially become the largest US data center market.

ERCOT, the independent system operator overseeing most of Texas's power grid, will be responsible for the audit. The state's aggressive pursuit of data center investment has accelerated its growth in the sector, with projections indicating it could surpass Virginia in market size.
