Houston, Texas – Texas Southern University (TSU) generated $1.6 billion in annual economic impact for the Houston area and supported 15,676 jobs, according to a report detailing its 2023-2024 economic contributions.
The university's economic impact assessment, released in July 2026, encompasses its operational spending, expenditures by students and visitors, construction projects, and research activities. A significant portion of this impact, totaling $1.3 billion, is attributed to TSU alumni working within the region.
The report further highlights the return on investment for a TSU education, stating that for every dollar invested, students see an average of $6.90 in increased lifetime earnings. Taxpayers and society also benefit from increased tax revenues and reduced demand for public services due to a highly educated workforce.
TSU President J.W. Crawford III commented that the university's impact extends beyond academia, fostering a stronger workforce and a more competitive economy. These findings align with the university's Ascend 2030 strategic plan, which focuses on student success, workforce alignment, and research excellence.
As Texas Southern University approaches its centennial in 2027, the institution is focused on continuing to expand its economic influence and demonstrate measurable contributions to the region's growth.
