Texas Startup Eden Tech Unveils New Desalination Technology

Texas-based startup Eden Tech has unveiled its Genesis system, a novel approach to desalination utilizing a reverse osmosis centrifuge (ROC) technology. Developed by founder Hunter Manz, the system uses a spinning membrane to separate salts and contaminants from water, which the company claims is two to three times more energy-efficient than conventional methods.

The company, having raised $3.3 million in funding, plans to refine its model over the next year before scaling for consumer and commercial use. Each Genesis unit is expected to process approximately 144,000 gallons of water daily. Traditional desalination has faced criticism for its high energy demands and the environmental challenges posed by the concentrated brine byproduct.

Eden Tech's strategy focuses on addressing these issues through both improved energy efficiency and innovative uses for the brine. The company has already secured agreements with oil and gas firms to treat the saline wastewater generated during extraction. Manz states the ROC system can recover up to 80% of the water processed, a significant improvement over the 30-40% recovery rates typical of conventional systems.

By extracting valuable minerals like lithium and rubidium from the brine, Eden Tech also aims to create new revenue streams and potentially lower the overall cost of water treatment. The stated long-term goal is to achieve a system where purified water is the sole waste stream, thereby reducing the industry's environmental footprint.
