Thailand's Marriage Equality Act Expected to Attract 4 Million Additional Visitors Annually

Thailand is poised to attract an estimated 4 million additional international visitors per year, generating nearly $2 billion in tourism revenue annually, following the introduction of its marriage equality act. The legislation is set to take effect on January 22, 2025. A study by digital travel platform Agoda projects these numbers within two years of enactment.

The new law positions Thailand as the first jurisdiction in Southeast Asia and third in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. This move is expected to capture a larger segment of the global rainbow tourism market, valued at over $200 billion annually. The report forecasts that the influx of visitors could also boost Thailand's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 0.3% and support an additional 152,000 jobs.

Beyond tourism receipts, the economic benefits are projected to extend to accommodations, food and beverage services, retail, and domestic transportation. The legislation is also anticipated to enhance Thailand's appeal to LGBTQIA+ travelers seeking inclusive destinations and potentially boost the wedding industry, particularly for destination weddings.

Agoda's Vice President of Corporate Development, Timothy Hughes, highlighted the economic significance of the LGBTQIA+ community in travel. He expressed optimism about the law's impact on local businesses and communities. The report's findings are based on an analysis of countries that have previously enacted marriage equality laws, showing an average increase of approximately 10% in international visitor arrivals within two years.
