Thales proposes autonomous air system for UK Project NYX

Thales UK has announced its intent to supply a sovereign autonomous capability for the British Armed Forces under the Project NYX initiative. The company is proposing a 'Minimal Deployable Capability' core system, intended to provide immediate field-ready functionality for autonomous operations.

The proposal draws on two decades of experience with Integrated Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) and 200,000 flight hours. Thales points to its work on the UK Peregrine programme and operations in the Gulf region—specifically the integration of rotary-wing weapons—as evidence of its technical readiness and speed of execution.

To support the proposal, Thales cites a supply chain comprising more than 200 UK-based partners, backed by an annual expenditure of over £500 million within the country. The company frames this as a low-risk strategy designed to align with the specific security requirements of the UK government.

Project NYX represents an effort by the UK Ministry of Defence to bolster its technological capabilities in autonomous warfare. Thales aims to secure its position in this sector by offering proven, modular solutions that leverage deep industrial integration within the UK.
