Thales to supply optronic and night vision systems for German armed forces

Thales has secured a significant contract to supply new-generation optronic and night vision systems to the German armed forces as part of the IdZ-ES (Infanterist der Zukunft – Erweitertes System) modernization program. Rheinmetall is the prime contractor for the initiative.

The contract mandates the delivery of several thousand optronic systems, including Thales' XTRAIM sighting systems and a new generation of night vision devices. These new devices combine image intensification with thermal imaging and will feature augmented reality display capabilities. The German armed forces will be the initial user of this advanced night vision technology.

Deliveries are set to commence in 2027, with production scaling up to several hundred units per month. Thales is also committing several million euros to expand its production and support facilities in Germany. This investment aims to meet increasing demand for military equipment and provide closer support to German customers.

The XTRAIM system, a combat-proven sighting solution, integrates reflex sighting with thermal imaging for rapid target engagement in all visibility conditions. Since 2024, approximately 20,000 units have been sold to armed forces globally. The new night vision system builds on Thales' NightRise family of binoculars, enhancing soldier situational awareness and survivability.
