Rebel Wolves' debut title, The Blood of Dawnwalker, was developed with a budget of approximately $40 million. The studio was founded by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, a former lead game designer for CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077.
The project began in 2022, with Tomaszkiewicz initially self-funding a prototype to attract partners. Chinese gaming giant NetEase later invested and acquired a stake of about 26% in Rebel Wolves, enabling the game's full development.
This development cost is notably lower than many AAA titles. For comparison, IO Interactive's Project 007 reportedly had a budget exceeding $200 million, and Sony's Marathon is rumored to have a similar budget. The Last of Us Part II and Horizon Forbidden West are also reported to have cost hundreds of millions to develop.
Despite the comparatively modest budget, The Blood of Dawnwalker has received positive reviews from critics and players. Metacritic aggregates reviews as "generally favorable." IGN awarded the game a 9/10, praising its blend of creative ideas and well-crafted characters.
The game was released on September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Rebel Wolves has stated satisfaction with the game's initial performance, which surpassed one million units sold within days. Player counts on Steam have remained strong, and the developer plans future updates, including a New Game Plus mode.
