The development history of Bosch dishwashers

Robert Bosch GmbH formally entered the residential dishwasher market in 1964, following four years of intensive research and development. The initiative began in 1960 with the creation of a dedicated division tasked with engineering automated dishwashing and drying cycles capable of removing stubborn food residue.

Engineers at the time faced significant material science hurdles, specifically regarding the durability of pumps, seals, and dispensers when exposed to high-heat, salt-heavy, and detergent-rich environments. The company collaborated with plastics experts to identify resilient materials that could withstand these chemical pressures, eventually transitioning from laboratory testing to mass manufacturing at the Dillingen plant.

The broader industry history traces back to 1886, when Josephine Cochrane patented a mechanical dishwashing device. Although showcased at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, these early designs were primarily restricted to industrial environments due to high costs and mechanical limitations. It was not until the mid-20th century that technical advancements made the appliance viable for private households.
