The historical foundations of Bentley Motors and its founder

Walter Owen Bentley established Bentley Motors on July 10, 1919, with the first vehicle produced shortly thereafter in London. Before entering the automotive sector, W.O. Bentley gained engineering experience in the railway industry and developed advanced alloy pistons during the First World War to improve aircraft engine reliability.

The company achieved international prominence in the 1920s through five victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours race, a feat that helped distinguish its vehicles in a competitive high-performance market. These early racing successes were instrumental in shaping the brand's identity as a manufacturer of powerful, performance-oriented automobiles.

In 1998, Bentley Motors was acquired by the Volkswagen Group. The company maintains its manufacturing operations in Crewe, England, where it continues to produce luxury grand touring vehicles. The firm's modern operations remain tied to the technical and design legacies established by its founder during the early 20th century.
