The legacy of the Bentley Boys and the brand’s early racing history

The reputation of Bentley Motors was solidified during the 1920s and 1930s by a group of affluent racers known as the Bentley Boys. This team achieved five victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours in just eight years, establishing the brand’s early dominance in endurance racing.

The group included figures such as Sir Henry 'Tim' Birkin, an ex-fighter pilot who pushed the technical limits of the cars, and J.D. 'Benjy' Benjafield, a medical specialist instrumental in the 1927 Le Mans victory. Their high-profile lifestyle and exploits both on and off the circuit created a distinct identity that persists in the company’s current marketing narrative.

Founder W.O. Bentley famously observed that the group’s activities created a brand mythology that surpassed that of most contemporary automakers. Today, the company maintains this heritage as a fundamental pillar of its historical identity.
