The Mowlem Theatre Launches £160,000 Fundraising Campaign

The Mowlem Theatre and Cinema in Swanage, UK, has launched a significant fundraising campaign with a target of £160,000 to ensure its continued operation. The initiative marks the 160th anniversary of the Mowlem Institute, originally established by John Mowlem in 1863 to improve community life and provide facilities for education and recreation.

The campaign includes a "Take Your Seat" program, inviting donations of £200 for a personalized plaque to be engraved on a theatre seat for ten years. Funds raised will support critical auditorium upgrades, including a new lighting desk and communication systems, contribute to operational costs, and help reduce a COVID-related business recovery loan.

Trustee and Fundraising Chair Laura Dickens highlighted the campaign's importance. "This year marks 160 years of the Mowlem Institute Trust, and every penny raised will enable our beloved Theatre, Cinema, Show Bar, and Community space to remain open for everyone to enjoy," she stated. Film director Edgar Wright, a patron of the theatre, has been honored with the dedication of seat J13 to launch the initiative.

The "Take Your Seat" program is the first of several planned fundraising activities for 2023 and early 2024. The Mowlem aims to solidify its role as Swanage's cultural hub, offering over 200 film screenings and 60-100 live performances annually.

The Mowlem Institute Charity is managed by a board of Trustees and a small staff team, striving to re-establish itself as a vibrant cultural center for the community.
