The Verge explores impact of AI on cybersecurity landscape
Cognition CISO Alex Stamos discusses how AI is automating cyberattack capabilities, forcing a rethink of modern digital defense strategies.

In an interview with The Verge, Cognition Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos detailed how artificial intelligence is transforming the threat landscape. Stamos argued that the cybersecurity industry is currently struggling to adapt to a new era where AI allows attackers to automate the entire "kill chain"—from identifying software vulnerabilities to deploying exploits in real time.
Stamos highlighted recent incidents where breaches at service providers led to cascading attacks on thousands of downstream companies. He noted that unlike traditional cyber warfare, which often involved significant human research and manual deployment, AI tools enable attackers to scan targets and develop exploits on the fly, dramatically increasing the frequency and efficacy of digital incursions.
While Stamos avoided predicting a permanent collapse of system security, he described the current environment as a difficult transition period. As both state actors and private cybercriminals leverage increasingly powerful models, the industry faces an urgent need to modernize defense strategies to counteract automated threat vectors.
