Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files, is releasing a director's cut of the 2008 film 'I Want to Believe' on Hulu, aligning it more closely with his original vision for a darker, more horrific story. The initial theatrical release was modified to a PG-13 rating, a decision Carter felt compromised his intended narrative.

Carter had envisioned a return for Agents Mulder and Scully that delved into themes of faith and the supernatural with a grimmer tone. Executives at 20th Century Fox reportedly deemed his original concepts too dark, leading to pressure to create a more broadly accessible, less intense film.

"We got to tell a good X-Files story," Carter stated regarding the original production, implying the challenges of balancing his creative direction with studio expectations. This new cut aims to restore the elements that were initially toned down.
