Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Opens in North Dakota Badlands

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library officially opened on July 4th in Medora, North Dakota. Situated within the rugged terrain of the Badlands, the institution distinguishes itself from traditional presidential libraries by focusing on visitor engagement with Roosevelt's life and legacy.

The library's architecture, designed by Snøhetta, merges with its environment, utilizing materials like rammed earth to integrate the surrounding landscape. Built to stringent environmental standards, the facility aims for carbon and water neutrality, powered significantly by an on-site solar array. The roof features accessible green space, and a boardwalk trail leads visitors through a restored native grassland.

Rather than a conventional museum, the Roosevelt Library frames the president's life as a series of lessons for contemporary visitors. The exhibition design firm Local Projects has developed interactive and immersive displays intended to place visitors in Roosevelt's perspective, covering his childhood, personal losses, and adventures.

An unusual aspect of the project was the parallel development of the building and its exhibitions, allowing narrative themes to directly influence the architecture. Large windows offer views of the surrounding landscape, reinforcing a connection to nature and Roosevelt's own experiences in the region. The library aims to reflect Roosevelt's conservationist legacy and inspire visitors with a similar commitment to future challenges.
