Chinese chemical manufacturer Shanghai Starsky New Material Co., Ltd. (Starsky Chemical) has announced that its Tetrahydrofuran-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (THFDCA) is drawing attention for use in biodegradable polyester and polyamide production. The company attributes this interest to the compound's unique chemical structure and its efficient, high-yield conversion from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF).

THFDCA is reported to enhance the mechanical strength, durability, and flexibility of biodegradable polyesters. According to Starsky, THFDCA-containing polyesters exhibit improved wear resistance and greater flexibility compared to traditional bio-based alternatives, making them suitable for applications in packaging, textiles, and specialty films. The compound also reportedly contributes to the biodegradability of polymers, reducing environmental impact.

Applications extend to polyamides, such as nylon. Incorporating THFDCA into polyamide chains is said to improve thermal stability and chemical resistance. Starsky states that THFDCA-based polyamides are also more biodegradable than conventional nylon, supporting the production of sustainable textiles and industrial components.

The company claims that the synthesis of THFDCA from HMF occurs under mild reaction conditions with a high yield exceeding 91 percent. Starsky Chemical supplies THFDCA with consistent quality, enabling reliable production of biodegradable polymers. The compound is positioned to reduce reliance on petrochemical monomers and support a circular economy.
