Authorities have initiated measures to manage the situation. Lime has been applied to cover the animal carcasses as a preventative step against disease outbreaks. Investigators have not yet been able to enter the facility to determine the cause of the fire, as the removal and disposal of thousands of animal bodies must be handled safely first.
The incident has also drawn criticism from environmental groups. The Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Sachsen-Anhalt (BUND) has highlighted the risks associated with industrial-scale pig farming. The organization had previously contested expansion plans for the facility, raising concerns about animal welfare and environmental impact.
